General Questions About Software Licensing

What types of licenses and enforcement mechanisms are available?

Node-locked and floating licenses are available as options to license your software.

A node-locked license means that the license is tied to a particular computer or USB key. If you choose a USB key, your software can be installed on as many computers as you wish however only computers with a USB key attached will permit the software to run. An iLicense (cloud-based internet license) is another form of a node-locked license and will only allow the software to run on a particular computer for which the license was issued.

Floating licenses allow any computer on a local area network to run the software provided the number of computers currently running one or more sessions of your software does not exceed the number of licenses issued for the network.

Do you offer subscription licenses?

Yes. Subscription licensing allows you to use the software for the duration of the subscription. During this time your software is fully supported and is eligible to be upgraded when new releases become available. When the subscription ends, you are welcome to renew it and continue to use the software. If you choose not to renew, the software license(s) are disabled.

Do you require "named user" software licensing?

No. Regardless of what form of license enforcement you choose, AMT does not require a particular user name such that only that user may use the software.

We have perpetual licenses now. Will we be forced to switch to subscription licensing?

No. If you have perpetual licenses covered by a software maintenance contract, you are all set. You are also welcome to add additional perpetual license(s) when the need arises.

We have perpetual licenses now but canceled the maintenance years ago. Can we upgrade to the latest release?

Your cancellation of maintenance resulted in the forfeiture of the perpetual software license(s) that were covered by your software maintenance contract. You must purchase a software subscription for each license you wish to upgrade.

I lost my USB license key. Can I get a replacement key?

No. If you have a legacy perpetual license, you must repurchase the software license to get a new key. If you have a subscription license, you must purchase a new subscription. Therefore treat the USB key as though it is as valuable an asset as the computer it is connected to. Check with your insurance agent; your business insurance coverage may provide a way to recoup some or all of the cost to replace your software.

My USB license key stopped working. Can I get a replacement?

If you have a legacy perpetual software license is covered by a software support agreement or have a software subscription, the USB key can be replaced. If the key failed because of an internal failure, there is no fee for replacement of a defective key. Physically damaged keys can be replaced for a nominal fee.

If you have a legacy perpetual license and are not covered by a software maintenance contract, your key can not be replaced. You must upgrade to a software subscription license to receive a new replacement key.

In all cases the defective key must be returned to your AMT Software representative.

Our floating license server is being swapped out. Can I get license codes for the new server?

If you have legacy perpetual license(s) and a current software maintenance contract, then yes you can get a license transfer. There is no fee for migrating to a different floating license server.

This also applies to customers with software subscription licenses.

In both cases, one (1) license server transfer is permitted during the subscription or software maintenance contract period.

Customers not covered by a software maintenance contract must upgrade to a new subscription license to enable the new floating license server.

I inadvertently damaged the USB key such that it doesn't work anymore. Can I get a replacement?

If you have a legacy perpetual license that is covered by a software maintenance contract or a software subscription, the you can purchase a new key to replace the damaged one. A nominal fee (cost of the key + shipping) is assessed. The damaged key must be returned to AMT Software.

If you do not have a software maintenance contract, your key can not be replaced. You must upgrade to a software subscription license to receive a new key.

I have a legacy perpetual license but I don't want a USB key. Can I get a perpetual iLicense?

Certainly. If you currently have a USB key license and want to switch to an iLicense we can do that for you. The USB license key must be returned to AMT Software.

Can I run more than one concurrent session?

Yes. Regardless of the what form of licensing you choose, you can run any number of concurrent sessions of any AMT application on your computer.

Can AMT applications be licensed for Windows server to support multiple remote client computers?

No. Installing on a server computer running Windows Server edition and attempting to run the software from a remote client is not allowed.

My computer at work has a USB key. When I use remote desktop to run from home, the software says there isn't a USB key present so I can't get a license. What's wrong?

Remote desktop ignores the USB ports on your computer at work so our software doesn't "see" the USB license key. You will find AMT application is unsuitable for this client/server type of usage and is strongly discouraged. Call us to discuss an alternate licensing method for "home" user(s).

Do I need a new license to run the latest version of ExpertCAD?

When a new release of software occurs it may require a software license update. The requirement for an updated license will be prominently noted in the printed release notes that accompany your software update. Once you have updated your license, you will be allowed to run the latest release as well as all previous releases of the software.

Can I sell my ExpertCAD license key and CD?

No. As stipulated in your AMT Software License Agreement, software licenses are non-transferable.

My company is being acquired by another company. Is it possible to transfer our AMT software licenses to the acquiring company?

In general, the answer is no as the EULA originally agreed to clearly stipulated:

Non Transferable

You may not transfer or assign the Software or this Software License Agreement or any rights or obligations hereunder. Any attempt to do so will automatically terminate this License without the need for notice. This termination is without prejudice to all other legal rights and remedies of AMT Software.

Contact your AMT representative to explore options available for continued use of the software.

Is there an evaluation version of ExpertCAD available for download that doesn't require a license?

No. Contact your AMT Software sales representative and discuss your situation. It may be possible to arrange for download of the software and issuance of a temporary license for evaluation purposes.

Can I transfer an iLicense (internet-based license) from one computer to another?

Yes. An iLicense is tied to the host ID (MAC address) of a particular computer. If you need to transfer this license, call or e-mail your AMT Software customer support department and they can do this for you over the phone.

Is an iLicense the same thing as cloud-based software?

Cloud is a loaded term these days so let's not go there. The software is always installed on your computer hard disk. There is no portion or program(s) that run "in the cloud" or stores your data "in the cloud". The only transaction that happens over the internet is a request for a license and a reply from there server. That's it.  Our software does not track you, monitor your usage or data and never will.

Do I have to have an internet connection to use an iLicense?

Yes. If you are not connected to the internet, it will not be possible for the application to acquire a license. There is no "grace period" for you to be disconnected from the internet and still have a valid license. You must be able to connect to the internet in order to start an application licensed in this manner.

Do I have to remain connected to the internet for an iLicense to continue to work?

No. The license check occurs only once per session when the application starts after which an internet connection is not required. If you exit the application and start a new session or if you start another concurrent session, then the internet connection is required.
